Poland and Germany will lock horns with each other in a friendly international match this week. The game between Fernando Santos’s side and Hansi Flick’s team will be held at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw and is scheduled to kick off at 7:45pm UK time on Friday.
Poland
Poland are a major force in European football and tend to qualify for the European championships quite regularly now. They have some major players, such as Wojciech Szczęsny, Jakub Kiwior, Jan Bednarek, Robert Lewandowski and Arkadiusz Milik. Poland reached the group stage of UEFA Euro 2012 and Euro 2020 and the quarter-finals at the 2016 European Championship.
Fernando Santos has been in charge of Poland since the end of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The former Portugal head coach suffered a defeat in his first game in charge. Poland went down 3-1 to the Czech Republic in UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying Group E. Poland bounced back with 1-0 win against Albania and will face Moldova in another qualifier next week after the international friendly match against Germany on Friday evening.
Team News:
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski will lead the line for Poland against Germany. The 34-year-old had a very good season for Barca, scoring 23 goals and providing seven assists in 33 La Liga starts for Xavi’s side, who won the title. Jakub Blaszczykowski could play 16 minutes in what would be his final game for Poland after recently announcing his retirement from international football. VfL Wolfsburg winger Jakub Kaminski, 21, could play a part as well for Poland against Germany.
Germany
Germany are one of the biggest footballing nations on the planet and have done extremely well over the years. The Germans have been one of the most consistent teams over the past two or so decades, but there have been some worrying signs of late. Germany failed to do much of note at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and could not even get out of their group.
Since then, Germany have played three international matches, and the results have been poor. While the former World Cup winners beat Peru 2-0 on March 25, just three days later they went down 3-2 to Belgium. And earlier this week, Germany could only play out a 3-3 draw with Ukraine. Germany are the host nation for the UEFA Euro 2024 finals, so they have already qualified for that tournament.
Team News:
Chelsea forward Kai Havertz could start for Germany against Poland at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw on Friday evening. Havertz could played in a deeper role, with Niclas Füllkrug of Werder Bremen leading the line for the visiting team. RB Leipzig full-back David Raum, Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka and Borussia Dortmund attacker Julian Brandt could miss out on places in the starting lineup., with Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich) and Timo Werner (RB Leipzig) coming in. Bayer star Joshua Kimmich could start and captain Germany.
